Translational Research

  • Clinical Trial

The Side-Out Foundation is sponsoring a first of its kind clinical trial to examine the effects of individualized treatment on patients with metastatic breast cancer. Individualized treatment, known as targeted therapy, provides doctors a better way to tailor cancer treatment and offers the hope of more precisely targeting the cancerous cells, which would reduce side effects and improve quality of life.

The trial protocol has brought together the diverse skills and unique experience of community oncologists, nurses and researchers in the field molecular medicine. TGen Drug Development Services (TD2) will manage the trial for the Side-Out Foundation. Clinical trials will occur at TGen Clinical Research Services (TCRS) at Scottsdale Healthcare and Fairfax Northern Virginia Hematology – Oncology. The two major contributing laboratories are CARIS Life Sciences, and George Mason University’s Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine.

Researchers will utilize these advanced molecular profiling technologies, focusing on tailoring therapy for each patient based on the individual genomic and proteomic molecular portrait within the metastatic lesion itself. The patient would then be treated with a single agent based on the aggregate information provided by the genomic and proteomic molecular profiling analyses.

Compassionate Support

The Side-Out Foundation receives its donations from hundreds and potentially several thousand high schools and colleges across the country. Each school in turn gets its support from one or more local communities. It is the intent of the foundation to give back to these communities by having them benefit from the collective investments it makes in research, education and counseling services.

With the assistance of school officials, coaches and students, local hospitals and cancer community support organizations will be identified. These organizations will be the recipient of breast cancer educational materials and newsletters/reports of Side-Out’s clinical trials that can be put to practical use in the community.

The Side-Out Foundation through a 24 month grant to Life with Cancer® (LWC) has formed a partnership to provide general cancer information, education programs and guidance to local communities.
