SOAP Scholarships

 

In 2013, 87% of scholarship applicants earned scholarship awards, funds to be applied to their current/future college tuition. Follow the instructions below to apply for the 2014 scholarship awards!

Eligibility

  1. Must be a high school junior/senior or college student.
  2. High school students must be enrolled in an accredited U.S. college/university by October 1 following his/her high school graduation.
  3. Must host a breast cancer fundraising event for The Side-Out Foundation in 2014.
  4. Participation in volleyball or any other sport is not a requirement.
  5. Previous winners of the SOAP scholarship awards are not eligible.
  6. Winners of the Anne Hughes Memorial Scholarship are eligible to win, however they may not apply the educational hours from the Anne Hughes Scholarship application to the Side-Out Ambassador Program scholarship application. They must complete additional hours.
  7. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Awards

  1. Side-Out offers 19 Side-Out Ambassador Program scholarships worth a total of $20,000, awarded in December each year.
  2. Together with the Chesapeake Region Volleyball Association, Side-Out will award one $1,000 scholarship in April to a volleyball player in the Chesapeake Region. The Anne Hughes Memorial Scholarship details are listed separately.
  3. The SOAP awards will be offered in various denominations for college education expenses: $500, $1,000 and $2,500. The Review Board decides which amount a winner will earn.
  4. Winners will be notified Friday, December 19th, 2014.
  5. Scholarship awards will be sent directly to the student’s college to be applied toward his/her tuition costs.
  6. All scholarship applicants who fulfill submission requirements will also earn a Community Service Award. Applicants involved in the sport of volleyball are eligible to apply for the Side-Out/AVCA National Dig Pink Awards.

Deadline

Applications must be e-mailed to soap@side-out.org no later than Monday, December 1st, 2014 by 11:59 PM EST.

Application Requirements

To be considered for a scholarship, applicants must complete all of the following requirements:
  1. Submit the SOAP Awards application (applicants should only submit the application if they are committed to completing all requirements listed below).
  2. Host an initiative following these three pillars: Make a statement, Educate and Fundraise!
    • Organize an event to bring their community together for breast health awareness.
    • Use the knowledge they gained from their educational hours to teach fellow students and community members.
    • Raise funds to support The Side-Out Foundation’s initiatives to enhance research and patient services. Funds should be received by Side-Out by Monday, December 1st, 2014.
  3. Briefly explain their marketing and fundraising strategies in a short paragraph/bulleted list, to be included with the essay and educational hours described below.
  4. Complete a minimum of two hours of breast cancer education, ideally focusing those 2 hours on one of the following activities:
    • Volunteer at a local hospital or patient support organization.
    • Visit a breast cancer research lab.
    • Interview a local oncology nurse and/or physician.
    They should detail their experience in the Educational Hours form. Hours spent organizing a Dig Pink event do not count toward educational hours.
  5. Submit a typed essay between 500 and 750 words in length, addressing the following questions:
    • What did the experience mean to them and their community?
    • How did it impact their lives and the lives of those around them?
    • What did they learn from this experience and how will they pass their knowledge on to others?
    • What makes them deserving of a scholarship award?
  6. Optional: create a video or photo montage of their experience as a Side-Out ambassador (no longer than 3 minutes).

Submission Details

  1. Submit the SOAP Awards application, a summary of their fundraising and marketing strategy, typed essay, event funds and a signed Educational Hours form to soap@side-out.org. They must be received by Monday, December 1st by 11:59 PM EST.
  2. Incomplete applications will not be eligible.
  3. Do not attach certificates, awards or transcripts of any type.
  4. Documents should be submitted in one of the following formats: Word or PDF.
  5. Photos or videos should be submitted in one of the following formats: JPG, video URL or Power Point.
  6. If they have any trouble submitting their application, please contact us: soap@side-out.org or 877-344-7465, Extension 200.

Application Review Details

  1. The SOAP Review Board will judge each application and winners will be notified by The Side-Out Foundation via e-mail Friday, December 19th.
  2. Event organization and fundraising accounts for 30% of the applicant’s total evaluation score and will be judged on the effort put into spreading the word about the Rally and their fundraising initiatives.
  3. The educational hours will account for 30% of their total evaluation score and will be judged on two main criteria:
    • Did the applicants complete at least 2 hours of breast cancer education?
    • Were the hours spent on breast cancer education? Spending time in the medical field is the goal. Volunteering to do paperwork or set up for charity events is important, but it doesn’t give the applicant the education application review board members are seeking.
  4. The essay will account for 40% of their total evaluation score and will be judged on the following criteria:
    • Did they answer the questions they were instructed to address?
    • Is the essay clear and well-written?
